What to Expect

In our first meeting I will ask you to tell me about the aspects of your life that your are wanting help with. I will listen carefully to what you say and ask questions about the things that are not clear to me. At the end of the first meeting I will give you my preliminary sense of whether I can be helpful to you and we will discuss next steps.

Sometimes in the initial meeting clients are eager to "get going", or to "do something about it". However, in my experience, if there was something simple that you could do right away to solve the problem, you would already have done this. The clients who seek my help have typically tried other things-other counselors, self-help books, seminars, etc.-and haven't found the help they are looking for. So I think it's important to carefully consider the full picture before suggesting a course of action.

In subsequent meetings, we will explore more deeply the issues you have raised. The course of our conversation is impossible to predict, but its purpose will be to find a way to see your life from a new perspective, one that allows for a fuller and more satisfying way of life for you.

Frequency of Meetings:

Psychotherapy can only be effective in the context of an ongoing relationship, so it is important to establish a regular schedule of meetings. We will discuss and establish the most useful frequency of meetings for you personally.

All payment is made directly from you to me. To provide you with the best treatment our work together must be confidential. To provide you with the maximum degree of privacy possible I do not belong to insurance company provider networks or accept direct payments from insurance companies. I will, however, provide you with a statement that allows you to bill your insurance provider yourself. Many people find that this method of payment yields out-of-pocket expenses roughly comparable to what they would incur if I billed their insurance company directly and it affords a much greater degree of privacy to you.

If I feel that you would benefit from medication I will discuss this with you, and if you so desire, I will refer you to a psychiatrist for a medication evaluation.
